AS OHIOANS, THE DESSNERS HAVE IDEALIZED FEELINGS ABOUT WISCONSIN;  THEY CONSIDER IT "THE PURER, MORE WHOLESOME MIDWEST."

my new favorite book

I've been in the market for a laptop case for awhile now, especially after a near disaster involving soup (note to self: never put liquids in glad ware).  Fortunately I discovered twelve south's bookbook cases.  They are sturdy, functional, and impeccably designed.  This will definitely save me from losing another macbook to liquids.

SHE WOULD SIMPLY WAIT ON THE BRIDGE, CALM AND OBSTINATE, UNTIL EVENTS, REAL EVENTS, NOT HER OWN FANTASIES, ROSE TO HER CHALLENGE, AND DISPELLED HER INSIGNIFICANCE.

Apparently I have really girly taste in shoes, particularly if they have bows, judging by my shoe wish list.  Unfortunately, only the last ones are likely to end up in my closet, unless my constant ebay scourings end in some mad discounts.

Io sono l'amore

This is at the top of my list of films to see at the MSP Film Festival (playing April 25 & 29) because, who wouldn't want to learn how to be italian from Tilda Swinton?

Block Party

I’m digging these shoe's clean, retro vibe and the color block design-—kind of like legos, no? I think it has something to do with the solid red soles. Added bonus: you don’t have to deal with that whole laces issue.

I have a feeling Michel Gondry would approve, considering his past experience with legos.

This is home to Yes Men, created by Joe Locher in the Pritzlaff Building.  I'm pretty much in love with everything in this space especially the tub, his use of windows to divide up the space and the mix of modern, nostalgia and nature.  So, hopefully Joe's open to visitors and/or isn't weirded out if I try to get a peek when I'm home....

i was carried to Ohio in a swarm of bees

Anyone who knows me knows I have a borderline obsession with The National, proved by the gross amount of time I’ve spent listening to their 2007 album Boxer (and loving every minute).  That and their lyrics are featured on the top the this blog.  If you haven’t heard it, you are sorely missing out. And don’t be surprised if it doesn’t get you right away--it’s one of those slow brooding albums, one that takes multiple listens before you start hearing it’s intricate nuances, so give it some time. It’s kind of like the first time you watched The Office, really unfamiliar but you quickly got into it and now you consider all of Dunder Mifflin your dear friends.

Needless to say, I’m beyond excited for the Ohio/Brooklyn band’s latest, High Violet, out May 19th. "Bloodbuzz Ohio," the first single off the album, sounds similar to their other songs, especially the driving drums. Matt Berninger’s voice is as deep and mood as ever and the band hasn’t lost their layered arrangements, but these are all things that are key to their formula. I’m interested to see how the rest of the album pans out. I’m betting it’ll be similar to listening to Boxer: a slow evolution will emerge with every listen, quietly highlighting some innovations woven into the familiar.

god bless us, every one!

Ever since finding out that Vincent Kartheiser/Pete Campbell played Tiny Tim, I can't stop picturing it.  While his blue suits always did strike me as childish, like a bigger version of a boy's first suit, it would be hard for Tiny Tim to bust a move in his weakened state.

people say we’re similar, that we both mix all these things in the pot and spit them out differently, but she spits it out exactly the same! None of her music’s reflective of how weird she wants to be or thinks she is. She models herself on Grace Jones and Madonna, but the music sounds like 20-year-old Ibiza music, you know? She’s not progressive, but she’s a good mimic. She sounds more like me than I fucking do! That’s a talent and she’s got a great team behind her, but she’s the industry last’s stab at making itself important - saying, ‘You need our money behind you, the endorsements, the stadiums’ Respect to her, she’s keeping a hundred thousand people in work, but my belief is: Do It Yourself.

Volume 2

She & Him’s lovely sophomore album provides the perfect soundtrack to chase away any lingering winter blues.  Volume 2 picks up where its predecessor left off, evoking the same mix of rockabilly tinged with vintage Southern California pop.  However, this time around, She & Him’s Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward add depth and polish to the recipe.
